Maricopa Rams Make Waves with Record-Breaking Swim Performance
The Maricopa High School swim team recently showcased their extraordinary capabilities at the Arizona Interscholastic Association Division II State Championships held on November 7 and 8 at the picturesque Skyline Aquatic Center in Mesa. Leading the charge was senior swimmer Holden Gehrke, who didn’t just participate; he exploded onto the scene by breaking four school records. With a staggering time of 1:44.68 in the 200-yard freestyle, Gehrke not only secured second place but also crushed his own previous record by an impressive one and a half seconds.
Team Spirit and Achievements
“We had a wonderful showing and multiple move-ups from the original psych sheet going into the meet,” expressed Head Coach Meg O’Brien, beaming with pride at the team’s performance. The championships were a testament to the hard work and dedication that the Rams have poured into their training regimen this season. In addition to his phenomenal performance in the freestyle events, Gehrke left spectators on the edge of their seats during the 400-yard freestyle relay, shattering another school record with his phenomenal leadoff split of 48.29 seconds. Teaming up with Dante Flores, Mykah Bitter, and his younger brother Hudson Gehrke, they secured sixth place with a relay time of 3:30.51, which was three seconds faster than the previous school best.
A New Generation of Swimmers
The depth of talent within the Rams’ ranks became evident across both boys’ and girls’ teams. Junior exchange student Hana Iwashita from Yokohama, Japan, made her mark by breaking her own school record in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:07.20, showcasing not just individual excellence but also the appeal of international sportsmanship. Despite her individual accomplishments, Iwashita placed 27th in the butterfly and 18th in the 200-yard freestyle, proving that every swim contributes to the team's goals.
Looking to the Future
In terms of future prospects, the boys’ team finished commendably at 12th out of 32 scoring teams while the girls’ team placed 30th, a significant achievement considering they entered the meet projected below that mark. This performance indicated an improvement trajectory for both groups as they evolve and mature as competitive athletes. The program will bid farewell to seniors Holden Gehrke and Mykah Bitter, yet the horizon looks promising as freshmen Hudson Gehrke and Charity Horner shined in their state meet debuts, both reaching finals in their respective events.
